Cédric Laurant

Data privacy lawyer and public policy expert who works on European and international projects in the areas of US and EU privacy and data protection, online and consumer privacy, Internet law, e-commerce, social media, telecommunications, information governance and information security for international organizations, governments, private companies, trade associations, public interest organizations and NGOs.  With more than 15 years of experience under his belt in those fields, he handles legal research and public policy projects, government affairs and public advocacy missions, and offer technical assistance, training and capacity-building services. He currently also is the IT & Copyrights Manager at Dumont Bergman Bider, a law firm based in Mexico City.

Cédric Laurant is frequently invited to speak at conferences around the world on international data privacy legal and public policy issues, especially in Europe, the United States and Latin America, and has testified before the European Parliament, US Congress and governmental bodies.

Between 2012 and 2013, he worked as an attorney with Ulys, a law firm based in Brussels, Paris and Tel Aviv and as an Invited Research Fellow, with the Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas, of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico.  He was a Policy Fellow with Access (New York, NY), a Senior Research Fellow with the Center for Media and Communication Studies at the Central European University in Budapest (Hungary), and a Legal Researcher at the  Interdisciplinary Centre for Law & ICT (ICRI) of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven) in Leuven (Belgium).  Between 2007 and 2008, he was a Visiting Law Professor at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota (Colombia), and between 2001 and 2006, the International Privacy Director at the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, DC.

He recently was the Editor of the Guía de Privacidad para Hispanohablantes 2012 (Privacy Guide for Spanish-speakers) and the Research Director of European Privacy & Human Rights 2010.

He is an attorney, member of the District of Columbia Bar (US) and a graduate of the Université Catholique de Louvain Law School (Belgium), with a Master of Laws from Columbia Law School (New York).
